Lobos defeat Schreiner, 71-64 at Bulldogs Classic

SEGUIN- Caleb Thomasson continues his senior scoring spree as the Ackerly forward tallied a season-high 35 points to lead Sul Ross to a 71-64 victory over Schreiner University in day one of the Bulldog Classic Tuesday in Seguin.

Thomasson missed his fifth double double of the year by just two rebounds and mustered two blocks, a steal and an assist.

A three-pointer by B.J. Hollis tied the game at nine with 17:58 left in the first half.

Three more ties would ensue before a three-point bucket by the Mountaineers Matthew Rindhal at 15:40 put Schreiner ahead for the next seven minutes.

Thomasson's layup at 8:02 put the Lobos ahead, 29-28.

Thomasson closed the half with another layup at 1:40 giving Sul Ross a 39-34 advantage heading to the break.

Sully held a slim lead for nearly half of the second period.

A layup by Schreiner's Blake Kelly at 11:44 tied the game at 46.

Layups by Tristen Licon and Thomasson at 11:33 and 10:21 broke the knot for a 50-46 Lobo lead.

Sul Ross would maintain the lead until the 7:24 mark when the Mountaineers' Andrew Sparks nailed a three-point basket to tie the game at 58.

Schreiner broke the tie and sported a narrow lead until Licon knocked down two free throws at 5:03 to knot the game back up at 60.

The Lobos then used a 7-0 run, capped by another three-pointer by Hollis at 3:07, to take a 67-60 lead.

Sully held Schreiner to within four and never lost the lead as Licon ended the day with two foul shots for the 71-64 Lobo win.

Licon and Hollis finished the day with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Sul Ross moves to 7-4 on the season while the Mountaineers fall to 3-5.

The Lobos will take on tournament host Texas Lutheran in the second part of the back-to-back on Wednesday.

Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.
