ALPINE, Texas- Sul Ross State University (3-3, 2-3) was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to No. 5/8 Hardin-Simmons (5-1, 4-1) by a 35-10 count Saturday night at Jackson Field.
The Cowboys' Ty Hooper started Saturday's scoring spree with a 40-yard floater to Matt Sandoval. Chance Reneau converted the point after attempt with 10:05 left in the first quarter.
Hardin-Simmons then turned to its special teams as Reese Childress returned a 90-yard punt to the house. Reneau's PAT was good at the 8:11 mark.
With just five seconds remaining in the opening period, Xavier Jones scampered five yards following a 13-play, 76-yard march. The point after kick by Reneau was good as the visitors took a 21-0 lead to the second quarter.
A 62-yard touchdown pass from
James Davis (Houston/South) to
Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs) came with 12:18 left before the half.
Eli Lopez banked on his extra point to pull Sully to within 14.
HSU's Jones scored again, this time on a six-yard trot after seven plays and 75 yards. Reneau's kick cleared the uprights at 9:54.
Lopez then booted a 33-yard field goal with just under two minutes before the break as the Cowboys took their 28-10 advantage to intermission.
Following a scoreless third period, Zai Zai Smith scored from seven yards out capping a six-play, 75-yard drive with 8:47 left in the contest. The extra point kick by Reneau gave Hardin-Simmons a 35-10 boost and the eventual victory.
For the game, the Cowboys outpaced Sul Ross in total offensive yardage, 500-230. Hardin-Simmons posted 371 yards on the ground while the Lobos mustered 127.
Hardin-Simmons was three for five in red zone conversions while Sully finished at one for two.
The Cowboys were one for two in fourth down conversions.
Individually, Davis completed 11 of 23 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Jordan Batson (San Antonio/Wagner) netted 57 yards off of seven carries.
Jones led Lobo receivers with three receptions for 72 yards and a score.
Defensively,
Mike Quinonez (El Paso/El Dorado) recorded a team-high 13 tackles including 11 solo.
Sarkeithian Thomas (Beaumont/Ozen) secured 12 stops with 10 solos.
Thomas posted a sack for a loss of nine yards while
Zack Roberson (Houston/Cypress Ranch) notched a pair of sacs for losses of 11.
Sir Daniel Turner (San Antonio/Judson) also recorded a sack for a loss of five yards.
Derrick Winters (Beaumont/Ozen) recorded two breakups in the effort.
Sul Ross will visit Howard Payne University next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
