Football back on track with 52-15 win over Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD- The Sul Ross State University Lobos (4-3, 3-3) unleashed a 38-point barrage in the second half and coasted to a 52-15 drumming of Howard Payne University (1-6, 1-5) Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Lobos tacked on the first points with 9:26 left in the opening quarter as Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs) scored on a 20-yard toss from Jeremy Reed (Grandview, MO/GHS). Eli Lopez (Austin/AHS) converted the extra point kick for a 7-0 Sul Ross advantage.

Jalen Styner then scored on a 13-yard run capping a drive that took just 39 seconds, two plays and 65 yards. Lopez bingoed on the extra point with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter.

Howard Payne kicker Blake Phipps nailed a 22-yard chip shot with 3:30 left in the first then hit a time-expiring 35-yard field goal to end the half.

Sul Ross then broke out with a 17-point attack in the third quarter.

Andre Wilson (Kingsville/H.M. King) reached the end zone on a 33-yard rush summing up five plays and 68 yards. The PAT by Lopez was good for a 21-6 Lobo advantage at the 12:42 mark.

Sully's special teams then went to work as Jacques Wisner (Dallas/Newman Smith) sailed 43 yards on a punt return. Lopez hit the extra point with 11:03 remaining in the third quarter.

Lopez then belted a 36-yard field goal at 4:45 giving Sul Ross a 31-6 lead heading to the closing frame.

Josh Lopez (Hereford/HHS) reeled in a two-yard scoring strike from Jeremy Schilhab (Uhland/Lehman) early in the fourth quarter before Lopez's PAT spread the gap, 38-6.

Howard Payne then scored its first touchdown in two weeks off a one-yard scamper by LeMarcus Harmon. An attempted two-point rush by Harmon fell short with 12:47 left in the contest.

The Lobos added more insurance at the 9:55 post as senior quarterback James Davis (Houston/South) scored on a 31-yard keeper. Lopez converted the extra point for a 45-12 favor.

Phipps would add the final three points for the Yellow Jackets, this time on a 25-yard field goal at 5:22.

Sophomore wide out Marcus Montez (Monahans/MHS) would seal the lid shut with a 23-yard touchdown reception from Paul Rodriguez (Weslaco/WHS). Lopez booted the extra point with 2:31 remaining in the game.

Sul Ross amassed a season-high 517 yards while Howard Payne tallied 413. The Yellow Jackets outperformed the Lobos in rushing yards by a 350-306 margin.

Wilson rushed 12 times for 131 yards and a touchdown. Davis completed seven of 16 passes for 120 yards.

Montez grabbed a pair of receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Jacques Wisner (Dallas/Newman Smith) led defenders with eight tackles on the day.

Damian Espizona and Mike Quinonez registered registered six tackles each. Matthew Vasquez and Levah Tarry sported a sack each. Sarkeithian Thomas, Derrick Winters, Zack Roberson and Sir Daniel Turner posted a breakup each. Jakorey Richard notched an interception.

Lopez was perfect on PAT's at 7-for-7.

Sul Ross returns to Jackson Field next weekend for a 6:00 p.m. homecoming kickoff against East Texas Baptist University.
