ALPINE, Texas- Sul Ross (4-4, 3-4) and East Texas Baptist (6-2, 5-2) football teams combined for 1,040 yards of total offense but the Tigers assembled a 28-point attack in the second half and defeated the Lobos, 42-28 in a cool, windy homecoming Saturday evening.
Saturday's contest marks the second straight weekend the Lobos have amassed over 500 yards of offense following a 517-yard outing at Howard Payne on October 21.
The Tigers' Eric Johnson hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from Brian Baca for the first score of the game. Ryan Travis converted the extra-point kick with 9:40 remaining in the first quarter.
Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs) answered for the Lobos on a 21-yard strike by
Wesley Moss (San Antonio/Brennan) at the 6:56 mark.
Eli Lopez (Austin/AHS) nailed the PAT to tie the game at seven.
Johnson struck again with 7:44 left in the second period on a five-yard toss from Baca. Travis' extra-point cleared the uprights as East Texas Baptist carried their 14-7 lead to the half.
A 29-yard pass by
Paul Rodriguez (Weslaco/WHS) to
Steven Savedra pulled Sully to within a point with 8:23 left in the third. The PAT by Lopez then knotted the game at 14.
The visitors broke out on a pair of touchdown runs from Austin Morriel and Tarek Beaugard at the 6:14 and 2:43 posts, third period. Both of Travis' extra point kicks were good as the Tigers doubled up on the Lobos with a 28-14 lead.
James Davis (Houston/South) then scored on a 71-yard trek on a two-play, 81-yard drive. Lopez fired off the extra point with 2:00 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Baca then reached Johnson again, this time from three yards out off of 10 plays and 71 yards. The point after attempt by Travis put East Texas Baptist ahead, 35-21 with 8:54 left in the fourth.
Davis then capped an 11-play, 79-yard drive with a six yard scamper with 4:17 left in the game. Lopez was true on the extra point as Sul Ross trailed, 35-28.
ETBU sealed the victory with a 35-yard insurance pass from Baca to Xavier Gray at the 2:33 mark. Travis' PAT gave the Tigers a 42-28 advantage and the eventual victory.
For the game, ETBU polled 74 plays for 534 yards while the Lobos posted 76 for 506.
The Tigers took advantage of their air attack with 369 aerials yards while Sully was held to 214. Sul Ross was flagged 11 times for 158 yards while ETBU was penalized seven times for 59.
Davis completed 12 of 22 passes for 119 yards but suffered two interceptions and three sacks. Davis led the ground attack with 14 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns.
Savedra reeled in four receptions for 74 yards and a score.
Mike Quinonez and
Sarkeithian Thomas led defenders with 13 and 12 tackles respectively. Quinonez posted two and a half sacks for 14 yards lost.
Derrick Winters nabbed an interception.
Job Mason sported two breakups while
Damian Espinoza,
Jakorey Richard and
Jermaine Stevens, Jr. added a breakup each.
Sul Ross will tangle with Texas Lutheran University in the Lobos' final home game next Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
