Cowboys survive rally in 84-80 victory over Sul Ross

ABILENE- Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) nailed down a double double 25 points and 12 rebounds but solid three-point shooting by the Cowboys propelled Hardin-Simmons (13-4 7-1 ASC) to an 84-80 conference win over visiting Sul Ross (9-8, 5-3 ASC) Saturday.

The Lobos will host Concordia University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Cowboys rolled up a 5-0 run to begin play before Brock Anders posted a three-point shot to pull Sul Ross to within three.

Anders popped another three ball with 16:14 left in the first half giving the Pack a brief 8-7 lead.

Justin Jones then drained a pair of free throws returning the favor back to the home team as the Cowboys went on to sport two, 14-point leads down the stretch.

Isaiah Tillman (Lubbock/Frenship) knocked down the final bucket of the half from long range as Sul Ross trailed 42-36 at intermission.

A layup by Thomasson at 14:38 tied the game at 49 before Tillman connected again from three-point distance giving the visitors a three-point advantage.

Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) hit two foul shots at 12:08 giving the Lobos their largest lead up 56-49.

The Cowboys responded with a 6-0 run to regain the favor with 10:22 left in the game.

A 5-0 sprint by the Lobos ended with a three-point bucket by Webb giving Sul Ross a 63-62 lead at 8:09.

Two free throws by Christian O'Neil at 7:54 returned the lead back to Hardin-Simmons as the Cowboys were able to hold off a stubborn Lobo attack down the stretch and held on for the 84-80 victory.

Anders posted 19 points in the effort while C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) totaled 14. Webb finished the day with 10 points.

Sul Ross ended the day at 32-of-66 shooting from the field including an 8-of-18 showing from the beyond the arc. The Lobos connected on eight of 11 free throws at 73 percent.
