War Hawks slip past men's basketball, 92-89

ABILENE- C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) scored a season-best 25 points but McMurry (8-7, 4-3 ASC) rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Sul Ross (9-7, 5-2 ASC), 92-89 in a Thursday night shootout at Kimbrell Arena.

The Lobos will tangle with Hardin-Simmons University at 3:00 p.m. Saturday to close out a six-game road swing.

A layup by Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) capped a 6-0 run for Sul Ross to begin the contest.

The War Hawks scratched their way to a 7-6 lead off a  fast break layup by McMurry's Aaron Gettys with 17:05 remaining in the first half.

A scoop shot by Ross at 16:47 started a another 6-0 Lobo attack that ended with a jumper by Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) at 14:55.

A pair of free throws by A.J. James (Spring/SHS) extended Sully's lead to 10 with 12:09 left before the half.

Ross then fired off two foul shots at 9:53 giving the visitors their largest lead of 26-14.

A 7-0 run by McMurry pulled the home team to within a two-point deficit trailing 38-36 at 3:39.

The Lobos ended a pair of short-lived War Hawk leads as James hit a shot in the lane for a 48-45 Sul Ross advantage heading to the break.

Sully broke out to a 62-52 lead aided by a 9-2 run that ended with a three ball by Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) at the 15:39 mark.

The Lobos held the lead until 8:03 as McMurry finished off a 9-2 run for a 74-73 War Hawk advantage.

The home squad would maintain a slim lead for the next seven minutes before a layup by Ross knotted the game at 86 at 1:28.

A free throw by Connor Dawson (Tilden/McCullen County) gave Sul Ross its final lead of the game before McMurry's Darious Watts bingoed on a three-point bucket as the War Hawks would go on to stake the 92-89 victory.

Thomasson shouldered a double double 17 points and 11 rebounds on the evening while Jacob Dawson and Isaiah Tillman (Lubbock/Frenship) collected 13 and 10 points respectively.
