AUSTIN- Candice Hugi (Marysville, CA/MHS) collected nine kills as Sul Ross dropped a 3-2 stretcher to Concordia in the conference opener Friday in Austin.
The Lady Lobos begin ASC play at 0-1 and drop to 1-10 on the season while Concordia bumps to 5-5 and 1-2.
Sul Ross will face West Division preseason favorite Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday in Belton.
The Tornadoes won the first two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-19 while Sully grabbed 25-19 and 25-20 victories in sets three and four. Concordia took the rubber game in a 15-12 decision.
Following a 3-3 tie in the third game, Sul Ross fought its way to a 20-14 margin off a kill by Hugi. Alexis Robinson (Spring Branch/Canyon Lake) posted the final offensive score before a bad set by the opposition handed the Lady Lobos the 25-19 win.
In game four, Sul Ross battled its way out of an early deficit and went on an 8-0 run that ended on a kill by Kayla LaRue (Kingwood/Porter).
Sully kept the Tornadoes at bay down the stretch an held on for the five-point, 25-20 win.
Both teams battled through several ties in the closing set but Concordia busted an 11-11 knot with a 4-1 run to claim the match decider.
Katie Reeves (Odessa/Permian) and Nina Sterling (San Marcos/SMHS) nailed down 16 and 15 assists respectively while McKenna Thomas (Odessa/Permian) led defenders with 26 digs. Sterling tallied 10 digs in the effort.
