BROWNWOOD- Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) accounted for 14 points and 10 rebounds but a shooting deep freeze by the Lobos helped Howard Payne to a 68-56 upset win in the regular season finale Saturday.
Sul Ross will face the No. 4 seed in the ASC East in the form of the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets in the nightcap of Thursday's tournament opener at the Pete P. Gallego Center.
Sully defeated LeTourneau in Longview in the conference opener, 72-56 back on December 3.
Despite the win over the Lobos Howard Payne's shot at a post season tournament berth was snuffed as Mary Hardin-Baylor squeaked out an 80-79 victory over visiting Hardin-Simmons Saturday earning the Crusaders the needed fourth seed in the ASC West.
Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) sported 10 points in the effort against HPU as Sully shot a season low 17 of 59 from the field at just 29 percent including an uncharacteristic three of 21 from outside the curve.
Sul Ross never really dominated throughout the opening period and managed a game high, seven-point, 14-7 lead off a layup by Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) with 11:57 remaining in the first half.
A handful of ties ensued with the half ending on a free throw by Harrison to knot the game at 28.
More ties followed along with lead exchanges in the second half before the Jackets grabbed the lead off a layup by former Lobo D.J. Gardner at 12:03.
That would kick start a firm hold by Howard Payne down the stretch as the Yellow Jackets ended the game on a 5-0 run to seal the 68-56 victory.
The Lobos finish the regular season at 15-9 with a 10-4 mark in conference play while Howard Payne winds up their year at 10-15 and 5-9.
Thursday night's tip against LeTourneau is scheduled for 7:30.
