VideoALPINE, Texas- Two crucial foul shots by Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) with 21 seconds left in the game were just enough cushion Sul Ross needed as the Lobos posted a narrow 77-75 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor Thursday at the Gallego Center.
The contest ended on an NBA three-pointer by UMHB's DeMarius Cress just two seconds before the final buzzer.
The victory over the Cru gives Sul Ross a 2-0 season sweep over UMHB following an 85-75 Lobo win in Belton on January 23. With two more games remaining on the regular season schedule Sul Ross is one victory away from claiming the ASC West Division and hosting this year's conference tournament.
Freshman Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) led Sul Ross scorers with 17 points. Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) and Rocky Feiciano (El Paso/Hanks) contributed 16 and 13 points while
Dawson and Jacob Caloss (Poth/PHS) added 12 and 10. Dawson secured a double double with a team best 11 rebounds.
As a team the Lobos finished shooting 27 of 61 from the floor at 44 percent. Sully hit four of seven shots from outside the arc in the second half following a slow production in the opening period to finish at 32 percent.
Sul Ross started the game on a 12-0 attack that ended on a jump shot in the lane by Dawson with 15:53 left in the opening period.
The Crusaders were able to climb to within a pair of five-point deficits and trailed by four, 20-16 at 8:14 following a free throw by Daniel Mills.
Two more free throws by Mills and one from Braden Hammond closed the gap to one at 7:28 and the Lobos up 20-19.
Hammond gave the Cru their first lead of the contest with a pair of foul shots at the 6:32 mark but the 23-22 lead by the visitors was short lived as the Lobos commenced on a 5-0 attack and went to intermission leading UMHB 34-26.
Sully spread the margin to double digits with a three-pointer by Caloss at 18:55 and the Lobos leading 37-26.
Sul Ross would go on to hold a 15-point, 49-34 advantage as Feliciano drained a three ball with 13:55 left in the game.
The Crusaders inched their way down to a one-point deficit taking advantage of a handful of Lobo turnovers.
A jumper by Cress at 8:35 gave UMHB their first lead of the half up 51-50.
Dawson responded with a jumper from the elbow at 8:07 which swung the lead back to Sul Ross, 52-51.
Two more lead exchanges would ensue before the Lobos assembled a quick 4-0 run ending on free throws by Thomasson at 6:29 and Sully leading 58-54.
A three-point shot by Avery Polchinksi at 5:05 returned the lead to UMHB by a slim 61-60 margin.
Following a 63-63 tie at 4:09 Feliciano would begin a 5-0 run for the Lobos on a jumper while Dawson closed the run on a free throw giving Sully a 70-63 advantage.
Russell Greene's jumper at 26 seconds closed the Cru deficit to a point trailing 73-72.
Dawson's two free throws at 21 seconds paired with two more foul shots by Thomasson at the four second mark set up Cress's buzzer-beating three-pointer as Sul Ross edged out UMHB for the 77-75 victory.
Sul Ross maintains their lead in the Conference West and improves to 14-8 on the season and 9-4 in ASC play. UMHB drops to 7-15 and 3-9.
The Lobos will close out the home season Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Concordia.
