VideoALPINE, Texas- Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) recorded a team high 11 points while Shannon Villanueva (San Raman, CA/California) added 10 as Sul Ross fell to visiting Mary Hardin-Baylor, 50-43 Thursday evening.
Villanueva totaled seven rebounds to lead the team at the boards.
The Lady Lobos suffered a slow night's shooting converting just 15 of 52 from the field at 29 percent and hit just two of 13 from outside the curve. Both three-pointers came in the second half.
The Crusaders held the advantage for the first four minutes of the game before a jump shot by Miles gave Sully a 6-5 lead with 5:38 remaining in the first period.
Miles then connected on a free throw at 5:10 before Ashley Ousley (Killeen/Shoemaker) converted a foul shot at 4:59 giving the home team an 8-5 lead.
A 6-0 SRSU run ended with a midrange jumper by Jonette Jackson (Killeen/Shoemaker) at 1:10 with Sul Ross leading 14-7.
UMHB ended the period on three free throws and trailed 14-10 heading to the second.
The Lady Lobos held the lead for the first half of the second quarter before a jumper in the paint by Jonelle Smith gave the Cru a one-point go ahead, leading 20-19 at 5:18.
Mary Hardin-Baylor would hold a very slim favor for the remainder of the period and went to the break up 26-25.
Two free throws by Ousley returned the lead to Sul Ross to begin the third quarter.
A jump shot by Ashely Minjarez (El Paso/Irvin) at 9:11 gave Sully a 29-26 advantage.
Meghan Turner's layup at 8:25 returned the lead to UMHB as the Crusaders would go on to lead by six, 36-30, with 5:11 left in the third.
The visitors held Sul Ross to a four-point margin as the Cru headed to the closing period up 39-35.
Mary Hardin-Baylor pounced on a 6-0 and led by 12, 47-35 with 3:39 remaining in the game.
The Lady Lobos narrowed their deficit to four at 1:21 off a layup by Ousley before the Cru banked on three foul shots to claim the 50-43 victory.
With the loss Sul Ross falls to 4-19 on the year and 1-11 in conference competition. UMHB improves to 12-10 and 7-5.
Sul Ross will face Concordia in the final home game of the season at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
