BELTON- Elmhurst College (5-7) put up 45 second-half points and held Sul Ross (7-6) to 39 in the closing period as the Blue Jays defeated the Lobos 71-64 in the closing day of the Crusader Classic hosted by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Sully will venture to Natchitoches, Louisiana for an ASC bout with Louisiana College on January 5.
The Blue Jays held the lead for the first two minutes of play before Sul Ross assembled a 7-0 run ending on a
Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) jumper with 15:22 remaining in the first half.
A three-pointer at 11:03 by Elmhurst's Derek Dotlich broke an 11-11 tie as the Blue Jays sustained a slim lead through the remainder of the half and went to the break up 26-25.
The Blue Jays mounted a 6-0 run midway through the second half and posted a 12-point, 54-42 advantage.
Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) then canned a three-point shot at 3:50 pulling the Lobos to within three.
Elmhurst never led by more than nine down the stretch and held on for the 71-64 victory.
Sully finished with three players in double figures led by
Caleb Thomasson's (Ackerly/Sands) 20 points.
Anders and
C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) supplied 15 and 10 points in the effort.
The Lobos finished the game at 22-of-53 shooting good for 42 percent.
