Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) tallied 16 points as the Sul Ross men's basketball team (1-1) dropped a 90-74 decision to NCAA Division II opponent Lubbock Christian University (3-2) Saturday.
The Lobos will travel to Odessa on November 22 to face another DII team as U.T. Permian Basin entertains Sul Ross in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
Sully held a brief lead to begin the game as
Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay) put up the first bucket for either squad.
Following a 4-4 tie the Chaps secured a 6-0 run ending with a layup by Marcus Schuster with 12:58 left in the first half.
A jump shot in the paint by
Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) cut the Lobo deficit to one at 10:46.
LCU broke out to another double digit lead on a 9-0 run and led 23-13 at the 7:58 mark.
A 7-0 sprint by the home team pushed the Chap advantage to 15, 30-15 with 5:45 left before the half.
The Lobos closed the gap to five with two foul shots by Anders before Lubbock Christian used a 4-0 run to go up 39-30 at intermission.
The Chaps climbed out to an 18-point, 59-41 lead with 12:47 left in the closing period and would continue to a 20-point surge ending at 7:35.
Sul Ross could keep no closer than a 15-point margin as LCU ran away with the 90-74 victory.
Other Lobos in double figures included
C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) with 13 points.
Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) posted 10 points in the effort.
Dawson also led rebounders with six boards.
Sul Ross shot 46 percent from the floor against Lubbock Christian while converting eight of nine free throws at 89 percent.
