Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) shouldered a team best 21 points as Sul Ross (1-0) opened the 2016-17 season with an 82-77 victory over Schreiner University (0-1) Tuesday night In Kerrville.
The Lobos will be in action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tip at Lubbock Christian University.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 6-2 lead to begin the contest before an Anders three-pointer swung the lead in Sully's favor, 7-6 with 16:53 remaining in the first half.
Both teams traded leads over the next six minutes before
Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) bingoed on a short range jump shot to put the Lobos ahead 15-12.
Xavier Webb (Riverton/WY/RHS) broke a 15-15 tie at 8:40 with a three-point shot before back-to-back jumpers put the Mountaineers ahead by a slim 19-18 margin.
Schreiner went up by four off a three-pointer by Jared Thompson at the 8:14 mark.
Following a six-point deficit at 8:06 Sul Ross went to
Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) for a long range jumper at 7:56 giving the Lobos a 25-24 advantage.
C.J. Ross connected on a jumper from the elbow at 6:15 to put Sully up 32-26.
The Lobos then went on an 8-0 surge ending with a Dawson three-pointer putting the visitors up 47-37 with 1:32 left before intermission.
Schreiner cut its deficit to five as Thompson nailed a mid range jumper for a 47-42 Lobo lead heading to the half.
Sul Ross held off a resilient effort by the Mountaineers in the second half before posting a 9-0 run capped by mid range bucket by Ross at 9:55.
Schreiner pulled to within a one-point deficit as Thompson fired off a three ball at 1:50 and tied the game at 74 with a baseline jumper at 46 seconds.
Another tie ensued with 20 seconds remaining before Sully was able to pull away on a 5-0 run for the 82-77 victory.
Ross recorded 19 points on the night while Thomasson and
Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay) finished with 13 and 12 points. Rhodriquez was just two boards shy of a double double tying teammate Dawson with eight rebounds. Ross tallied eight assists while Anders was perfect from the charity stripe at four for four.
