ABILENE- The Sul Ross State University Lobos (4-3, 2-1 ASC) rebounded from a 21-15 fourth quarter deficit and went on to defeat host McMurry University (2-4, 0-3 ASC), 35-21 Saturday at the annual I-20 Shootout.
Saturday's victory over the War Hawks puts the Lobos on a three-game winning streak heading into next Saturday's home conference contest against nationally-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
With two minutes remaining in the first quarter,
Jordan Batson (San Antonio/Wagner) scampered one yard off a five-play, 58-yard scoring drive.
Adam Cruz converted the extra point kick for a 7-0 Sul Ross advantage.
Junior quarterback
James Davis (Houston/South) then scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 6:03 left in the second period.
Job Mason's two-point run put Sully up 15-0.
McMurry put their first points on the board at 27 seconds before the break as B.J. Ross connected with Stone Harris on a 12-yard scoring strike before Tanner Wright tacked on the extra point.
The War Hawks' Jordan Washington then picked off a Davis pass and scored on a 37-yard return with 5:39 left in the third quarter. Wright's kick was good as McMurry trailed 15-14.
The home team took the lead at the 11:58 mark, fourth quarter, as Trevor Goolsby scored on a five-yard toss from Ross. Wright added the extra point giving McMurry a 21-15 advantage.
The Lobos countered nearly two minutes later as
Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs) hauled in the first of two touchdown passes from Davis from 33 yards out. Cruz's extra point kick was good as Sully took the go ahead, 22-21.
Davis hit Jones again, this time for 57 yards before Cruz missed only his second extra point kick of the season at 7:28.
Batson saddled the final touchdown of the day at 43 seconds on an eight-yard run. Cruz's kick was good as the Lobos sealed the 35-21 ASC win.
Batson led the running game with 13 carries for 63 yards and two scores.
Davis finished the day completing 11 of 18 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown while Jones posted three catches for 96 yards and two trips to the end zone.
Damian Espinoza (Katy/Pope John Paul),
Alonte Thomas (Cameron/Yoe) and
Zack Roberson (Houston/Cypress Ridge) all accounted for seven tackles. Thomas notched three sacks in the victory including a breakup.
