ALPINE, Texas- Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) finished with a career best 23 points to lead the Sul Ross men's basketball team to an 82-76 victory over Belhaven Thursday at the Gallego Center.

Dawson was almost perfect  from the free throw line at 12 of 14 and was five of 10 from the field.

Other Lobos in double figures include Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) with 22 points and Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) with 10. Thomasson led the rebounding game for Sul Ross pulling down six boards.

The Lobos nailed half of their shots from the floor Thursday night at 26 of 52 including a 37 percent showing from outside the arc.

Sully started the  contest on a 7-2 run which ended on a three-pointer by Webb at the 17:40 mark in the first half.

Belhaven closed their debt to two off a dunk by Josh Gaskin at 15:50 before a layup by Josh Carpenter at 15:15 tied the game at nine.

Gaskin sank a jumper at 14:16 to knot the contest at 11 before the Lobos broke away with a 5-0 run to lead 18-11 at 12:17.

Sul Ross broke into its first double digit lead of the evening off a three-point shot by Dawson at 7:19 giving the Lobos a 29-19 advantage.

That set up two foul shots that Dawson converted with 6:36 left in the half as the Lobos held their largest lead thus far up 31-19.

A free throw by Carpenter at 36 seconds pulled Belhaven back to within 10 trailing 36-26 heading to the break.

A long range jump shot by Jacob Caloss (Poth/PHS) with 17:33 left in the second period gave Sully its largest lead up to that point, 43-30.

A 9-0 Lobo run set up an 18-point, 59-41 lead for the home team at 10:25. Sul Ross would go on to hold three more 18-point advantages, the last ending on two free throws by Thomasson at 8:09.

A fast break three-pointer by Carpenter at the 1:13 mark narrowed the Blazer deficit to seven trailing 78-71.

Carpenter would have the last word of the game on a jump shot in the final two seconds but it wasn't enough as the Lobos headed out with 82-75 victory.

Sul Ross is currently on a five-game winning streak and improves to 7-6 on the season while Belhaven falls to 2-9.

The Lobos will play host to East Texas Baptist Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
