Sul Ross shoots season best in 78-71 win over Comets

RICHARDSON-The Sul Ross men's basketball team shot a season high 29 of 51 from the field at 57 percent to claim a 78-71 conference road win over U.T. Dallas Monday in Richardson.

The Lobos were also red-hot from outside the arc hitting a season best 10 of 17 at 59 percent. Sully missed just three of 13 shots from the free throw line good for 77 percent.

Individually Alex Harrison (Lubbock Monterey) saddled 19 points to lead the scoring attack and led rebounders with nine boards.

Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) finished with 17 points while Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) and Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) rounded out double figure scoring with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Lobos won the battle in points off the bench and in the paint by margins of 26-13 and 30-28.

UTD went long distance as Kyle Coulter nailed a jumper outside the arc just 14 seconds into the contest.

Sul Ross answered with a layup by Harrison and a short range jump shot by Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) to put Sully up 4-1 with 18:58 left in the first half.

The Lobos broke a pair of ties off layups by Thomasson and Harrison before the home team took the lead and went on a seven point surge ending of a jump shot by the Comets' Noah Hill at 12:09.

A long distance jump shot by Feliciano at 9:15 returned the lead to Sul Ross up 18-17 before Anders connected on a step-back three at 7:20 to put the Lobos ahead, 23-19.

The Comets narrowed their deficit down to a point and reclaimed the lead off a jump shot by Jon Hatcher at 2:44 with UTD leading 29-28.

A free throw by Thomasson at 1:24 tied the game at 29 before a jumper from the elbow by Feliciano gave Sully a 31-29 advantage heading to intermission.

U.T. Dallas stole the lead off of two free throws by Caleb Banks and went up 34-32 with 18:17 remaining in the second half.

Following a four-point lead by the Comets at 16:10, the Lobos knotted the game at 39 of a Harrison layup at 14:45.

Another foul shot by Hatcher broke the tie before Thomasson scored on a layup and free throw to give the visitors a 42-40 favor.

Another midrange popper by Feliciano broke a 42-42 tie at 12:49 which started an 8-0 Lobo run.

UTD narrowed the gap to a point of a layup by Hatcher at 8:31 and the Comets behind 54-53.

A three-pointer by Jacob Caloss (Poth/PHS) and a fast break layup by Harrison resulted in a seven-point 62-55 SRSU lead with 6:42 left in regulation.

The Lobos broke out to an 11-point lead off a 5-0 drive ending with a free throw by Thomasson at 5:32 before Webb's three-point shot at 5:07 gave Sully a 70-58 cushion.

U.T. Dallas worked its way down to a two-point deficit with Banks' jump shot at 1:26.

Another three-pointer by Webb at 51 seconds put the Lobos up 74-69.

Sully ended the game on a 4-0 run to stake the 78-71 conference victory.

The Lobos improve to 6-6 on the season and 4-1 in conference play and remain in second place in the ASC West Division just two games behind first place Concordia. U.T.
Dallas drops to 7-2 and 2-1 but maintains a first place standing in the Conference East.

Sul Ross will return to the Gallego Center for a four-game home stand beginning with a 7:30 tip against Belhaven Thursday.
