CLARKSVILLE, Ark.-Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) collected 15 points and eight rebounds as Sul Ross beat University of the Ozarks in an 80-77 conference road outing Saturday.
Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay) notched a double double with 12 points and 10 boards while teammate Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) supplied 12 points of his own in the victory.
Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) and Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) tallied 11 and 10 points each on the afternoon as the Lobos converted over half their shots from the floor, 35 of 65 or 54 percent.
Sul Ross has shot better than 50 percent from the field over their last three games including a season high 56 percent finish in an 83-75 nonconference win at University of the Southwest on December 16.
Harrison scored quickly, just four seconds into the game off a fast break layup.
A three pointer by Webb at the 16:38 first half mark gave the visiting Lobos a 16-7 advantage before a layup by Rhodriquez on a drive gave Sully their second largest lead of the period, up 22-12 with 12:31 left in the opening half.
The Eagles chiseled their deficit down to three off a pair of free throws by Ben Grice and Sul Ross leading 22-19 at 11:11.
A 6-0 run by the Lobos ended on another layup off the break by Harrison giving Sully a 41-30 favor with 3:46 left before intermission.
Ozarks put a scare in the Lobo defense with an 8-0 drive which ended on a long range jumper by the Eagles' Josh Ferrell with 58 seconds remaining in the half and the visitors up 41-40.
Sul Ross gave itself a three-point cushion to end the half as Rhodriquez scored on a scooper and the Lobos leading 43-40.
Sully went on a 10-0 surge early in the closing half ending on a three-pointer by Webb which gave the Lobos a 55-42 lead at 15:58.
An 8-0 run by the Eagles midway through the period cut their debt to one, down 67-66.
Ozarks tussled their way to their first lead of the half as Josh Berard scored on a paint jumper that put the Eagles up front 68-67 at 5:51.
Sul Ross took the go ahead as Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) scored from midrange at 4:24 and put the Lobos up by a possession leading 69-68.
A transition layup by Dylan Gray gave the Eagles their final lead of the game before Jacob Caloss (Poth/PHS) ripped the net from three-point land putting the Lobos up for good, 72-70.
Sul Ross pounced on a 6-0 run which gave way to a layup by Harrison at 1:20 and the Lobos leading 78-71.
Another jump shot by Berard with 38 seconds remaining pulled the home team to within striking distance as the Eagles trailed 78-77.
Sully countered with a free throw each by Anders and Feliciano as time ran out for Ozarks in the 80-77 Lobo win.
Sul Ross improves to 5-6 on the season and 3-1 in ASC competition. Ozarks drops to 5-2 and 0-2.
The Lobos will take Sunday off before facing U.T. Dallas in Richardson on Monday, January 4. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
