TYLER- It came down to a missed free throw and a missed desperation toss as the Sul Ross men's team dropped a heartbreaking 66-64 decision to the Patriots of U.T. Tyler Saturday.
Patrick Mound (Cedar Park/Coleman) split two free throws with three seconds remaining in the game and grabbed a rebound to fire an off balance jumper as time expired.
Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterrey) collected a team-high 21 points for the Lobos with Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) posting 10 in the effort. Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) tallied 10 rebounds.
As a team Sul Ross finished the afternoon shooting 25 of 59 from the field at 42 percent but shot a season low one of 19 from beyond the arc at 5.3 percent.
The Lobos also saw a downturn at the free throw line converting 13 of 22 from the stripe at 59 percent.
The Patriots put up a 6-2 run to start the game before Sully tied the outing at six off a baby hook by Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay).
U.T. Tyler would go on to post a pair of nine point leads and went to intermission up 32-26.
Sul Ross narrowed their debt to a deuce off a layup by Harrison at the 18:47 mark in the second half.
The Patriots went up by 11 at 13:39 before Sul Ross used a series of short scoring spurts to close the gap by two trailing 50-48 with a steal and dunk by Harrison.
Mound nailed a three-point shot at 4:51 giving the Lobos a short-lived 56-54 lead.
Tyler took the go ahead and held Sul Ross to three, one-point deficits before the deciding trip for Mound to the line. Mound made the first of two free throws before grabbing the board on the missed second shot to fire the off the attempted three which hit just right of the rim as time expired.
The Lobos fall to 1-5 on the season and 1-1 on ASC play while the Patriots improve to 4-1 and 2-0.
The Lobo men will face Sam Houston State in an exhibition game Sunday at 2 p.m. in Huntsville.
