HOBBS, NM- Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) notched his fourth double double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds as Sul Ross defeated University of the Southwest, 83-75 Wednesday night in Hobbs.
The Lobos posted three more players in double figures as Xavier Webb (Riverton,WY/RHS) had a hot hand with 22 points. Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) and Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) finished the night with 10-point performances each.
Sul Ross shot an impressive 30-54 from the floor at 56 percent, good for a season high. Webb was four of seven from beyond the arc to help the Lobos to a 46 percent showing from three-point distance.
Sully put up an 8-2 lead to start the game before the Mustangs narrowed their deficit to one trailing 11-10 with 14:26 left in the opening half.
A jumper in the paint by Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay) moved Sul Ross ahead, 17-10 at 11:17.
Thomasson gave the visitors a pair of 10-point advantages off of two free throws and a layup as the Lobos spread the gap, 23-13 at 6:15.
Webb then nailed a three-pointer at 4:43 to give Sully their second largest lead of the half up 28-15.
Thomasson hit two more free throws to give the Lobos a 14-point, 37-23 lead heading to the break.
Sul Ross would go on to lead by their largest margin of 16 as Jacob Caloss (Poth/PHS) converted from long range with 7:17 left in the game.
Southwest was able to close the gap to below double figures down the stretch but was unable to take the go ahead as the Lobos capped the 83-75 victory.
Sul Ross improves to 3-6 on the season while the Mustang drop to 5-8.
The Lobos will host Louisiana College at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Gallego Center.
