Women’s basketball tops Northern New Mexico, 55-51

PHOENIX, Ariz.-Mia Ochoa (Levelland/Whitharral) bagged a team best 15 points and collected seven rebounds as the Sul Ross women's basketball team defeated Northern New Mexico in the final round of the ACU Classic Saturday in Phoenix.

Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) was just a board short of a double double with 12 points and nine rebounds for the day. Ashley Ousley (Killeen/Shoemaker) notched 10 points in the victory.

In specialty stats, Sul Ross outscored NNM by a 20-16 margin in points in the paint, 21-16 in points off turnovers and 10-6 in second chance points.

Northern New Mexico scored quickly from long range just seven seconds into the game to take a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Lobos scored their first bucket of the contest at the 6:31 mark as Ochoa knocked down a mid range jumper and Sully trailing 5-2.

Ousley's jump shot pulled Sul Ross to within five trailing 17-12 at the close of the first quarter.

The Lady Lobos tied the game on a 5-0 run late in the second quarter as Ashley Minjarez (El Paso/Irvin) nailed a three-point shot with two minutes remaining before the half.

A pair of free throws by Miles gave Sul Ross a brief 27-26 lead with under 10 seconds remaining in the period.

Northern New Mexico's Jocelynn Edmond converted a short distance jumper with four seconds left to give NNM a slim 28-27 lead at intermission.

A three-pointer by Ochoa at 9:24 in the third tied the game at 30.

NNM would maintain the lead until late in the period as Miles converted on a jumper and a layup giving Sul Ross a 37-34 advantage at 3:13.

NNM would end the quarter on a jump shot to knot the game at 39 heading to the closing period.

The game was tied on several occasions throughout the fourth quarter.

Two foul shots by Ousley tied the game at 47 with 4:36 left to play in regulation.

The Lady Lobos broke the stalemate on a 4-3 scamper before Edmond tied the game at 51 on a layup with 1:35 remaining.

Miles saddled back-to-back layups to give Sully a 4-0 run and a 55-51 lead with 41 seconds until the final horn.

Northern New Mexico was unable to convert from the free throw line as Sul Ross escaped with the 55-51 victory.

The Lady Lobos bump their mark to 2-3 on the season while NNM drops to 2-5.

Sul Ross opens conference play this Thursday and Saturday at LeTourneau and U.T. Tyler.
