LCU downs men’s basketball, 78-56

LUBBOCK-Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) posted 12 points while Jacob Caloss (Poth/PHS) contributed 10 as the Sul Ross men's basketball team fell to host Lubbock Christian University, 78-56, Tuesday evening.

Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) and Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) added nine points each in the effort. Thomasson was just a rebound and a point away from reaching a double  double for the night.

The Lobos suffered another night of cold shooting as Sully finished with 17 of 51 shots from floor against the Chaps.

Sul Ross finished with an impressive performance from the free throw line converting 17 of 20 shots from the stripe good for 85 percent.

LCU dominated in specialty stats winning the battle in the paint by a 30-18 margin. The Chaps also posted a commanding 25-6 margin in points off turnovers and a 46-30 margin in points off the bench.

The Lobos held a brief one-point lead at 16:53 in the first half as Harrison nailed a long range jumper.

Lubbock Christian recovered quickly with a 12-0 run and held a 17-5 lead at the 14:14 mark.

Sul Ross climbed to within a three-point deficit as Caloss converted from outside the arc at 8:51 and LCU up 22-19.

The Chaps would mount a 17-point, 41-24 lead at 2:11 before Rocky Feliciano (El Paso/Hanks) scored on a layup and a pair of free throws as the Lobos went to the break down 41-28.

It was all LCU in the second half as the Chaps went on a 30-point surge leading 73-43 with 3:41 left in the game.

Feliciano hit two more foul shots in the closing moments before the Chaps' Marcos Schuster hit a three-point shot in the final four seconds as Lubbock Christian coasted to the 78-56 win.

With the loss, the Lobos fall to 0-3 on the season while LCU moves to 4-1.

Sul Ross will face another DII opponent on Friday as the Lobos host U.T. Permian Basin in a 6 p.m. tip from the Gallego Center.
