Caleb Abney

Caleb Abney was named head coach of the Sul Ross State baseball program near the end of August, 2024.

Abney guided the Lobos in their first season at the NCAA II level and in the high competitive and exciting Lone Star Conference.  He made an immediate impact as the Lobos set the team single-season record for stolen bases (91 - breaking the record of 81 that had stood for 26 years) and having the third most home runs (45).  The team also set the school record for hit by pitch (53)  In addition, SRSU had 39 Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll selections which helped the team finish with a 3.15 G.P.A., the highest in school history.

Abney spent two years as the head coach at Lancaster Bible College (DIII), in Lancaster, PA.  He helped the Chargers qualify for the United East Conference tournament both years, and in 2022 to the best conference record (13-8) and finish (third) in school history.  Abney had six all-conference selections and helped in the development of Blake Greenly (two-time All-American) and Brian Coburn (2023 UEC Pitcher of the Year).

Under Abney, LBC produced their first back-to-back seasons with double-digit conference wins in program history (13-8, 12-9), its highest OPS in a 2-season span in program history (.872), they set the single-season program record for HR (58), XBH (142), and SB (131), and also finished in 2023 DIII baseball rankings 6th in the nation in HR and 20th in the nation in SB.

Before becoming a collegiate head coach, he spent time working at all three levels of NCAA baseball (DI, DII, DIII) as an assistant coach, while also working for three different MLB organizations (Braves, Rays, Twins) - including as a Minor League Hitting Coach with the Minnesota Twins. 

Abney was an assistant coach at King University (Tenn.) for the 2018 season.  The Tornado went 29-19 and qualified for the Conference Carolinas tournament.

Abney was a volunteer assistant coach at Austin Peay State University in the fall of 2018, before landing as a hitting coach in the Minnesota Twins organization.  Abney was responsible for developing hitters in the Gulf Coast League and at the Twins academy in the Dominican Republic.

Abney worked as an assistant for two stints at his alma mater, Covenant College - coaching with the Scots in 2016-17 and 2019-21.  During his three years, the Scots went 57-42 with seven All-USA South Conference selections. In 2020, Abney oversaw an offense that ranked among the top eight for all of NCAA Division III in five categories, including leading the nation in doubles. Over 2020-21, Covenant's offense produced its most runs/game scored in a 2-season span in program history (8.4), set the program record for HR and XBH in 2021, and had its highest winning percentage in a 2-season span in program history (.625).

Abney has coached in three different summer collegiate leagues: the PGCBL, the Valley League, and the Ohio Valley League. Most notably, he led the offense for the Watertown Rapids of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (2018), where the offense finished among the top two in 11 categories for the league, including leading the PGCBL in seven.

Abney played four years at Covenant College (2008-11).  He helped the Scots go from 6-37 in 2008 to 27-16 as a senior.  Abney was a four-time academic all-conference selection and saw his team finish as the NCCAA Mid-East Regional runner-up as a junior and senior.

Abney has a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Business, Coaching, Education) from Covenant College. He also has a Masters degree in Kinesiology from the University of Georgia and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
 
Abney lives in Alpine, Texas with his wife Savannah.
