Lobos Take Down Grizzlies

ALPINE, Texas – All the parts of the engine were in perfect unison as the Sul Ross State football team (1-1) beat Adams State (1-1) 53-26,  Saturday night at Jackson Field.  The win snapped a 14-game losing streak.

Freshman Will Howell ran seven yards for a score to put Sul Ross State up, 6-0 with 9:19 left in the opening quarter.  Adams State would score to take the lead at 7-6 at the 6:02 mark.

In the second quarter, the Lobos erupted for three touchdowns to lead 27-6 at the 2:47 mark.

Adams State slowly climbed back in the game to close to 26-20 with 7:19 left in the third quarter.  In a two-minute span, Howell hit senior Will Craven with touchdown strikes of 71 and 88 yards.  That sealed the game for SRSU.

On offense, the Lobos threw for 423 yards and ran for 233 for 656 yards in total offense.  That is the fifth best single-game mark in NCAA program history.  Howell was 24-of-39 for 423 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 31 yards and a score to total 454 yards in total offense. 

Craven caught 11 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns.  His yards is second best in program history.  Junior Rashad Madden had a very strong day rushing for 166 yards and a touchdown and averaging 10.4 yards a carry.

Defensively, Sul Ross State had eight tackles for a loss with three sacks and broke up five passes.  Junior Jabari Corbett led the way with eight tackles.

Sul Ross State is back home, Saturday, Sept. 19, taking on The University of Texas Permian Basin.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
