Lobos Open Season With Pioneers

ALPINE, Texas – There were some solid performances as the Sul Ross State football team (0-1) fell 34-20 to Wayland Baptist (1-0),  Saturday night at Jackson Field.

Sul Ross State was in control over the first 24 minutes of the game. Sophomore Marcos Garcia hit a 25 yard field goal in the first quarter and added a 36-yarder in the second.

That put the Lobos up 6-0 with six minutes left in the half.  Wayland Baptist took the lead 7-6 at the 5:08 mark.  SRSU had two drives that went deep but fell short.

In the second half, the Pioneers pushed the lead to 28-6 with 10:43 to go.  On the kickoff, senior Kyree Payton electrified the crowd taking it back 90 yards for a score, making it 28-12.

WBU went up 34-12 at the 5:30 mark.  Sul Ross State dug in and drove down the field.  Freshman Will Howell found sophomore Ronald Bell for nine yards and a score with 1:54 to go.

Freshman Aaron Martinez converted the two-point attempt to make it 34-20.  The Lobos went for an onside kick.  Wayland Baptist recovered and ran the clock out.

On offense, the Lobos threw for 272 yards and ran for 83 for 355 yards in total offense.  Howell had a strong debut going 24-of-38 for 263 yards and a touchdown and finishing with 287 yards in total offense.  Senior Will Craven caught nine passes for 105 yards while sophomore Eli Martinez ran for 73 yards.

Defensively, Sul Ross State had eight tackles for a loss with a sack.  Freshman Chanse Rhynes led the way with 11 tackles.  Right behind was sophomore Byron Carter with nine and junior Jabari Corbett with eight.

Sul Ross State remains home, Saturday, Sept. 5, taking on Adams State.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
