Lobos Play Hard On The Road

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Sul Ross State University volleyball team (0-2) opened the season at the Virginia Harris/Jeanie Miller Invitational, Friday at Paul Wright Gymnasium.

Southwestern Oklahoma State (1-1) L, 3-1 (25-13, 25-11, 23-25, 25-19)

In the first set, Southwestern Oklahoma State got off to a 7-3 lead.  Junior Anayah Sinclair had back-to-back kills.

That closed the gap to 7-5.  The Bulldogs went on a 9-3 run to take control.

In the second set, SOSU looked to end it early with a 9-4 lead.  The Lobos reeled off three straight points to close to 9-7.  A 9-1 run by Southwestern Oklahoma State effectively ended the set.

The third set was back-and-forth until 11-10, SRSU up.  The Lobos forced an error to start a 5-2 run to extend the lead to 16-12.

The Bulldogs slowly climbed back in, cutting the gap to 23-22.  Junior Brianna Galvan smashed the ball off the block to put Sul Ross State up 24-22.

SOSU picked up a kill to stay in the match.  The Lobos forced an error to close out the third set.

Early in the fourth set it resembled a see-saw.  Southwestern Oklahoma State scored the first four points.

Sinclair found the back corner to close an 8-4 run to tie the game at 8-8.  The Bulldogs swung it the other way with an 8-3 spurt to lead 16-11.

SRSU continued to fight.  Senior Katrin Hardardottir fired the ball down the middle to make it 17-14.  SOSU scored three straight and held Sul Ross State off.

For Sul Ross State, Sinclair had 11 kills and hit .381 while freshman Antyiahna Lang hit .364.  Defensively, Hardardottir and junior McKenzie Hart had four block assists each and junior Mia Espinoza had 11 digs.

For Southwestern Oklahoma State, Katja Blanchat had 15 kills and hit .750.

Lubbock Christian (2-0) – L, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-15)

The first set went back-and-forth early on.  Up 11-10, Lubbock Christian scored three straight points to lead 14-10.

Sul Ross State slowly climbed back in, forcing an error to close to 16-15.  The Lady Chaps reeled off seven straight points to turn the Lobos back.

In the second set, SRSU came out of the blocks firing.  Freshman Madelyn Patterson served up an ace to put Sul Ross State up 9-6.

LCU came back to tie the game at 14-14.  Patterson found the line to put the Lobos up 15-14.  Lubbock Christian went on a 7-1 run to lead 21-16.

SRSU dug in their heels and battled back.  Lang fired the ball down the middle to close to two, 23-21.  The Lady Chaps got the next two points to escape.

In the third set, Sul Ross State and LCU batted on even terms early.  Sinclair bounced the ball of the block to make it 8-7, Lobos.  Lubbock Christian reeled off an 8-4 burst to effectively end the match.

For Sul Ross State, Lang had eight kills and hit .375 while Patterson had three block assists.

For Lubbock Christian, Leigh Jespersen had 12 kills and Camryn Blair recorded 11.

Sul Ross State remains in Gunnison, Saturday, Aug. 29, playing Western Colorado and New Mexico Highlands.  The matches are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
