Lobos Put A Scare Into Chaps

LUBBOCK, Texas – It was a battle down to the final buzzer as the Sul Ross State University men's basketball team (3-17 Lone Star Conference, 5-21) suffered a narrow 69-67 lost to #9 Lubbock Christian (17-3 LSC, 26-4), Saturday afternoon at Rip Griffin Center.

For the first seven minutes, Sul Ross State and Lubbock Christian slugged it out.  Tied at 18-18 with 12:50 to go, the Chaps made a run.

LCU went up 27-19 at the 10:11 mark when the Lobos fired back.  Junior Ernests Locmelis hit one from the parking lot to close a run of eight straight points.

That put SRSU up 28-27 with 5:57 to go.  The teams traded buckets until Lubbock Christian surged ahead in the last minute to lead 38-32 at halftime.

The second half was a tight affair as the lead was more than five points only 1:43 the whole half.

Down 69-64 with 25 seconds to go, junior Antwonne Holmes got a three-point play the hard way, a bucket and a free throw.

Sul Ross State fouled with 17 seconds left.  The Chaps missed both free throws and the Lobos got the rebound.  Holmes put up a three-pointer that just missed in front of the buzzer.

The Lobos were dominating on the defensive rebounds pulling down 26 to just four offensive boards for the Chaps.  SRSU held LCU to 23.5% on 3-pointers, its second worse performance of the season.

Sul Ross State head coach Xavier Webb
"This is one tough lobo team that we all should be proud of this year. We played hard and together. We played three games in five days ending the season at LCU, ranked #9 in the country and #1 in the region and took them to the buzzer. I could not be more proud of this group and of the foundation they have laid. Love this group of Sully Lobos. Viva Los Lobos!"

For Sul Ross State, Holmes had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three steals while junior Tim Mikhailov scored 20 points and shot 7-of-10 from the floor with two triples.

For Lubbock Christian, Lucas Mercandino had 20 points.

Sul Ross State has finished the 2025-26 season.
