Lobos Swing Away With Comets

ALPINE, Texas – Junior Kaitlynn Frakes and freshman Baylie Savage smacked home runs as the Sul Ross State University softball team (0-2 Lone Star Conference, 2-7) lost 10-3 and 15-6 to UT Dallas (2-0 LSC, 4-2), Friday at Lobo Softball Field. 

Game-1
UT Dallas struck for six runs in the second inning.  In the bottom half, Savage walked and moved to second on a ground out.  Sophomore Carissa Fernandez was hit by a pitch; junior Valeria Aguilar smoked a double to score Savage and move Fernandez to third.

Following an out, junior Samantha Bustos doubled to clear the bases, making it 6-3.  The Comets held the Lobos in check the rest of the way.

For Sul Ross State, sophomore Jenna Leanos had three hits and Bustos had three hits and drove in two runs.  Junior Larryn Rooks (0-2) gave up five hits, six runs with none earned and walked three in two innings.

For UT Dallas, Allison Koch (2-0) gave up seven hits, three runs, walked two and struck out seven in seven innings.

Game-2
UT Dallas struck first with three runs in the first inning.  In the bottom of the first, Bustos singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch.  She would score on a  ground out.

In the second inning, Sul Ross State loaded the bases with two walks and a single.  Frakes drew a walk to force a run home, making it 3-2.

The Comets scored seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take control.

For Sul Ross State, Savage had two hits with a two-run homer run and Frakes had a two-run home run with three RBI's.  Sophomore Janelle Leanos (1-2) gave up 17 hits, 15 runs with 10 earned, walked four and struck out seven in seven innings.

For UT Dallas, Josie Karpinski (1-1) gave up five hits, four runs and walked two in four innings.

Sul Ross State takes to the road, Friday, Feb. 20 playing St. Edward's.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m..
