Lobos Race Past Greyhounds

ALPINE, Texas – A strong finish made all the difference as the Sul Ross State football team (1-2 Lone Star Conference, 2-3) beat Eastern New Mexico (0-3 LSC, 0-5) 56-43,  Saturday night at Jackson Field.  This is the most points the Lobos have scored in a Lone Star game.

Freshman Will Howell threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to freshman Keithron Lee and ran for a score to put Sul Ross State up 14-0 with 3:51 left in the first quarter.

Eastern New Mexico fought back to tie the game at 21-21.  Sophomore Jason Maltos hit a 26-yard field goal to put the Lobos up 24-21 at halftime.

In the first three minutes of the third quarter, Howell fired an 11 yard TD strike to Lee and junior Jason Sanford returned an interception 40 yards for a score.  That made it, 36-21, SRSU.

The Greyhounds came back to take the lead 43-36 with 9:38 to go in the fourth quarter.  The Lobos exploded for three touchdowns in the final 7:35 to take the win.

Offensively, Howell was 37-of-46 for 454 yards and four touchdown and ran for 82 yards and two scores.  He finished with 536 yards in total offense, the third best single-game total in NCAA program history.  Senior Taribbean Ramirez had 14 catches for 125 yards and Lee finished with seven receptions for 118 yards and three touchdowns. 

Defensively, SRSU gave up just 104 yards in the air, had two interceptions and three quarterback sacks.  Sophomore Emmanuel Osom had nine tackles, four for a loss, two sacks, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and picked off a pass.

Sul Ross State hits the road, Saturday, Oct. 10, taking on Angelo State.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
