Lobos And Mustangs Slug It Out At Jackson

ALPINE, Texas – It was back-and-forth action as the Sul Ross State football team (1-4 Lone Star Conference, 2-5) lost 48-41 to Western New Mexico (2-3 LSC, 3-4),  Saturday night at Jackson Field.

Western New Mexico just grounded it out in the first quarter and scored twice in the first seven minutes. From that point, Sul Ross State and the Mustangs traded points.  WNMU took a 27-14 lead at halftime.

At the 12:33 mark of the third quarter, senior Kyree Payton scored on a seven-yard run to make it 27-20.  From there, it became a pattern with Western New Mexico answering each Lobo score.

At the 8:27 mark of the final quarter, Payton returned a kickoff 82 yards.  Three plays later, freshman Will Howell found sophomore Ronald Bell in the end zone to make it 48-41.

The Mustangs went on a drive of almost six minutes.  Taking the ball over on WNMU's 38-yard line with 2:09 left, SRSU began marching down the field.  Howell took off for 10 yards and was stopped at the one-yard line as time ran out.

Offensively, Howell was 25-of-40 for 349 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 99 yards and two scores for 448 yards in total offense.  Bell had a strong performance with seven catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns

Payton had an impressive all-around performance.  He ran for 40 yards and a touchdown, caught three passes for 80 yards and a score and returned three kickoffs for 125 yards to finish with 245 yards in all-purpose yards.  Payton now has 1089 career KO return yards, second best in NCAA program history.

Defensively, the Lobos held WNMU to just 102 yards in the air.  Sophomore Emmanuel Osom had three solo tackles with nine assists for 12 total tackles and two tackles for a loss.  Freshman Chanse Rhynes had 11 tackles while sophomore Byron Carter had 10 tackles.
