Lobos Defeat Mustangs in LSC Road Win

Silver City, NM — Sul Ross State University Women's Basketball (2–14, LSC 1–9) traveled to Western New Mexico University (0–17, LSC 0–10) for a Lone Star Conference matchup on Drag's Court. The Lobos won the matchup 69–60 against the Mustangs.

Sul Ross built its road victory with steady scoring across all four quarters, putting up 17 points in the opening period, 20 in the second, 19 in the third, and 13 in the final frame to pull away late. Victoria Aguayo led all Lobos with a dominant all-around performance, finishing with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and six steals while going a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line; her 11 rebounds raised her career total to 602, marking her as the second player in program history to eclipse the 600-rebound milestone. Ariana Escalante added 15 points and five rebounds, continuing her consistent offensive production, while Leslie Mojica filled the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and two assists, as Sul Ross leaned on a complete team effort with senior leaders Victoria Aguayo and Ariana Escalante setting the tone with their toughness, composure, and two-way play, rallying their teammates through key stretches, controlling the paint and tempo, and helping guide the Lobos with confidence and discipline on both ends of the floor.

"I am very proud of our players who fought the entire ball game. I saw mental toughness on our players' part, which is what led to win the game against Western NM. Victoria, Ariana, and Leslie demonstrated their leadership. That was fantastic. Our players as a whole actually communicated on and off the court throughout the game, which leads to positive results. Our freshmen, Itzel and Emma, stepped up when we needed them. Our program really wanted this win, and I'm so proud of the team for getting this victory with their hard work. Go Lady Lobos!" - Head Women's Basketball Coach EJ Smith

The Lobos remain on the road for their next Lone Star Conference matchup, traveling to Richardson, Texas, to take on the University of Texas at Dallas on Friday, January 24, with tipoff set for 1:00 PM.
