Sul Ross State Opened Season With UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas – The Sul Ross State University football team opened its 2025 season falling 66-0 to NCAA Division I UT Rio Grande Valley, Saturday night at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium.

The Lobos battled tough early, trailing just 7-0 with eight minutes to go. The Vaqueros then scored three touchdowns over the next seven minutes to effectively seal the game.

Offensive Performance & Milestone
Quarterback Andrew Martinez completed 9-of-12 passes, giving him 305 completions and becoming only the fifth player in school history to reach 300 or more.

Running back Jose Trevino fought for tough yards throughout the contest, while wide receiver Landen Drake provided a steady target in the passing game, moving the chains on multiple plays. 

Defensive & Special Teams Highlights
Defensive back Brendon Martin anchored the defense with multiple tackles and consistent coverage with 11 tackles. Linebacker George Fatoke and Defensive Back Evian Thompson combined for over a dozen stops.

On special teams, Kyree Payton provided a boost with four kickoff returns, totaling 76 yards, helping the Lobos battle for field position throughout the night.

Looking Ahead
Sul Ross State continues its non-conference schedule on the road in Nacogdoches, Texas taking on Stephen F. Austin, Saturday, September 13, with kickoff set for 7:00 PM.
