Sul Ross State Falls To Falcons

ODESSA, Texas – Senior Ciera Avila and junior Adriana Hernandez had three hits as the Sul Ross State University softball team (7-25 Lone Star Conference, 10-31) lost 6-2 and 5-4 to The University of Texas Permian Basin (3-29 LSC, 8-34), Sunday at UTPB Softball Park.

Game 1
After five inning, the Falcons held a 3-1 lead. In the sixth inning, a walk, single and hit by pitch loaded the bases.

A sacrifice fly scored junior Tori Owens.  The Falcons scored three runs in the bottom half to seal the game.

For Sul Ross State, Avila had two hits.  Junior Leanza Chambers (2-13) gave up eight hits, three runs and walked three in 4.7 innings.

For UT Permian Basin, Emery Aguilar (2-4) gave up six hits, two runs, walked two and struck out one in seven innings.

Game 2
UTPB was in control up 5-0 after five innings.  In the sixth, Avila reached on an error followed by a two-run homer from Hernandez. Junior Elizabeth Clemente drew a walk and was replaced on the bases by freshman Taylor Terrazas.

Sophomore Samantha Bustos ripped a double down the left field line to score Terrazas.  Junior Hannah Clark went in to run for Bustos.

Freshman Jenna Leanos singled to move Clark to third.  A Falcon error allowed Clark to score to make it 5-4.

In the seventh inning, the Lobos had runners at third and second with one out.  UTPB retired the next two batters to hold on.

For Sul Ross State, Hernandez and Leanos had two hits.  Senior Alyvia Quintana (5-11) gave up 11 hits and five runs with three earned in four innings.

For UT Permian Basin, Jessica Cantrell (5-13) gave up 10 hits, four runs with two earned, walked one and struck out four in seven innings.

Sul Ross State hits the road, Friday, Apr. 11 taking on Angelo State.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
