Lobos Rally To Split With Mustangs

ALPINE, Texas – The Sul Ross State University softball team (8-34 Lone Star Conference, 11-40) split with Western New Mexico (12-30 LSC, 15-36), Friday at Lobo Softball Field.  The Lobos lost 6-2 and came from behind to win the nightcap 9-7.

Game 1
The Lobos had strong defensive plays to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard for the first three innings.

WNMU broke through with four runs in the fourth inning.  In the bottom half, freshman Alexandra Ramos led off with a walk.

Junior Tori Owens hit a ground ball that was thrown away.  When the dust cleared, Ramos had scored and Owens was at third.

Senior Ciera Avila singled to score Owens to make it 4-2.  Western New Mexico scored twice in the fifth to seal the game.

For Sul Ross State, sophomore Loren Loveless (0-3) gave up 11 hits, four runs and struck out one in four innings.

For Western New Mexico, Labraida Tenorio (4-17) gave up three hits, one run which was unearned, walked two and struck out two in seven innings.

Game 2
The Mustangs once again took a 4-0 lead, this time heading into the bottom of the fourth.  The Lobos put up two hits with four walks to score three runs.

WNMU scored twice in the fifth for a 6-3 lead.  In the bottom half of the inning, SRSU used two hits, an error and three walks to tally four runs.

That put the Lobos up 7-6.  In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Vivian Jimenez singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

An error put Jimenez at third and Owens on first.  Avila beat out a bunt to score Jimenez and move Owens to second.  Back-to-back walks pushed Owens across the plate to make it 9-6.

The Mustangs scored a run and had runners at the corners with one out in the seventh.  SRSU got a strikeout and a foul pop up to end the game.

For Sul Ross State, Jimenez had three hits while sophomore Samantha Bustos walked three times, scored twice and drove in three runs.  Freshman Janelle Leanos (3-2) gave up one hit, one run, walked two and struck out one in 2.3 innings.
