Lobos Split Up Mustangs

SILVER CITY, New Mexico – Senior Ciera Avila had four hits as the Sul Ross State University softball team (4-20 Lone Star Conference, 7-26) split with Western New Mexico (6-6 LSC, 10-23), Sunday afternoon at The Yard.

Game 1
The Mustangs scored eight runs over the first two innings to effectively end the game.

For Sul Ross State, senior Alyvia Quintana (2-9) gave up 15 hits, 12 runs with nine earned and walked two in five innings.

For Western New Mexico, Labraida Tenorio (4-10) gave up six hits, three runs with two earned, walked one and struck out one in 5.3 innings.

Game 2
After three innings, WNMU held a 3-1 lead over the Lobos.  In the fourth, Avila led off with a solo home run to dead centerfield.

Junior Adriana Hernandez reached on an error and was replaced on the bases by sophomore Kaitlynn Frakes.  Junior Elizabeth Clemente drew a walk.

Following a ground out, junior Kyndell Garcia smashed the ball over the fence to make it 5-3, SRSU.  The Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to tie it at 5-5.

The Lobos scored a run in the fifth only to see WNMU score twice in the bottom of the fifth.  In the sixth inning, freshman Jenna Leanos walked and sophomore Vivian Jimenez doubled.

A passed ball scored Leanos and pushed Jimenez to third.  Junior Tori Owens lifted a sacrifice fly to score Jimenez and make it 8-7.

The Mustangs led off the seventh inning with a hit and a walk.  SRSU got a flyout and turned a double play to end the game.

For Sul Ross State, Avila had three hits, Jimenez had two hits and scored twice and Garcia drove in three runs.  Quintana (3-9) gave up two hits and walked one in 2.7 innings.

For Western New Mexico, Alixe De Anda (0-7) gave up two hits, two runs and walked one in three innings.

Sul Ross State is home, Friday, Mar. 28 taking on Lubbock Christian (RV).  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
