Sul Ross State Splits Up Mustangs

ALPINE, Texas – Senior Alyvia Quintana threw a gem as the Sul Ross State University softball team (3-18 Lone Star Conference, 6-23) split with Midwestern State (6-14 LSC, 9-20), Saturday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.  The Lobos lost 12-3 and won the night cap 2-1.

Game 1
The Mustangs took a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the third.  Sophomore Vivian Jimenez doubled and freshman Alexandra Ramos drew a walk.

Junior Tori Owens singled through the left side to score Jimenez and move Ramos to second.  An error on a fielder's choice allowed Ramos to score to make it 6-3, MSU.  The Mustangs scored six runs in the fourth to seal the game.

For Sul Ross State, sophomore Samantha Bustos had two hits.  Junior Leanza Chambers (1-12) gave up seven hits, 12 runs with nine earned and walked three in 3.3 innings.

For Midwestern State, Kayleigh Bowers (3-4) gave up six hits, three runs with one earned, walked one and struck out two in five innings.

Game 2
The night cap was a pitching duel as Addison Lindemann and Quintana combined to surrender just five hits on the day.

In the fourth inning, freshman Jenna Leanos singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third base.  Ramos walked and moved to second as Leanos was out at the plate.

An error on a ground ball allowed Ramos to score to put the Lobos up 1-0.  In the fifth inning, Leanos reached on an error and went to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Ramos singled to left field.  The ball was misplayed by the fielder which allowed Ramos to score.  In the seventh, Midwestern State scored a run and had two on with two outs.  Quintana forced a ground out to end the game.

For Sul Ross State, Quintana (2-7) gave up two hits, one run, walked one and struck out five in seven innings.  She had a perfect game for 4.3 innings and a no-hitter going into the top of the seventh.

For Midwestern State, Lindemann (4-9) gave up three hits, two runs (neither earned), walked two and struck out one in six innings.

Sul Ross State takes to the road, Friday, Mar. 21 playing Eastern New Mexico.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. MT.
