Lobos Battle Strong Against Mustangs

ALPINE, Texas – Junior Victoria Aguayo had a double-double as the Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-15 Lone Star Conference, 2-17) lost 88-70 to Midwestern State (9-7 LSC, 11-11), Thursday evening at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

Sul Ross State came out as the aggressor against Midwestern State.  Senior Cheyanne Bonilla knocked one down from outside the city limits.

That put the Lobos up 8-6 at the 7:38 mark.  The Mustangs went on a 15-5 run to lead 21-13 with two minutes left in the period.

SRSU got two long-range bullseyes from freshman Sophiya Bustillos to close the gap to 21-19 with 43 seconds to go.  Midwestern State scored just in front of the buzzer to lead 23-19.

In the second period, Sul Ross State continued to hang with the Mustangs.  Freshman TaMaiya Mims scored off a nice pass from Aguayo to make it 28-25, MSU at the 8:19 mark.  Midwestern State scored 19 straight points to seal the game.

The Lobos shot 37% from 3-point range, the second best performance of the season.  SRSU held the Mustangs to 27% on treys, the sixth time in the last eight games an opponent has shot under 32%.

For Sul Ross State, Aguayo had a strong game with 17 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists while shooting 7-of-12 from the floor.  Bonilla had 19 points, three steals and hit five triples, Mims scored 14 points and Bustillos came off the bench to score 13 points with three treys. 

For Midwestern State, Zarria Carter had 32 points and nine rebounds.

Sul Ross State remains home, Saturday, Feb. 8, taking on #14 Lubbock Christian.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
