Sul Ross State Takes The Fight To Dustdevils

LAREDO, Texas – Sophomore Vivian Jimenez had four hits as the Sul Ross State University softball team (1-7 Lone Star Conference, 4-13) lost 5-3 and 7-5 to Texas A&M International (5-2 LSC, 12-7), Sunday at Dustdevil Softball Field.

Game 1
In the third inning, freshman Jenna Leanos and senior Ciera Avila singled.  Junior Elizabeth Clemente singled to score Leanos.

The Dustdevils scored twice in the fifth inning to take the lead.  In the sixth inning, Avila walked, moved to second on a ground out and went to third on a single by junior Adriana Hernandez.

Hernandez stole second.  An error on a ground ball scored Avila and moved Hernandez to third.  Hernandez then stole home to put the Lobos up 3-2.

TAMIU scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Jimenez singled in the seventh, but the Dustdevils got three straight outs to win the game. 

For Sul Ross State, Hernandez had two hits.  Senior Alyvia Quintana (1-4) gave up nine hits, five runs, walked one and struck out one in six innings.

For Texas A&M International, Kylie Goad (3-2) gave up three hits, two runs (neither earned), walked one and struck out one in two innings.

Game 2
In the first inning, a walk to Leanos, a double by freshman Alexandra Ramos and a walk to Avila loaded the bases.

Quintana walked to push Leanos across the plate.  A fielder's choice allowed Ramos to score making it 2-0.  Texas A&M International scored three in the bottom of the first to take the lead back.

In the second inning, sophomore Samantha Bustos and Jimenez led off with singles.  Following two outs, Avila singled to score Bustos.

Jimenez scored on a hit by Quintana to make it 4-3.  SRSU scored in the fifth inning to make it 5-3.

The Dustdevils scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Sul Ross State got the lead batter on base in the sixth.  TAMIU got three outs and set the Lobos down 1-2-3 in the seventh to close it out.

For Sul Ross State, Jimenez had three hits while senior Jasmine Garcia and Quintana had two hits each.  Freshman Janelle Leanos (2-1) gave up six hits, four runs, walked two and struck out one in four innings. 

For Texas A&M International, Tessa Ramirez (2-0) gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one in 2.7 innings.

Sul Ross State is back home, Friday, Feb. 28, playing St. Edward's.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m..
