Lobos Split Up Pioneers

ALPINE, Texas – The Sul Ross State University softball team (1-1 Lone Star Conference, 4-7) struck gold in their LSC debut splitting with Texas Woman's (1-1 LSC, 5-1).  The Lobos lost 2-0 and bounced back to win the nightcap 4-3.

Game 1
In the first two innings, Sul Ross State and Texas Woman's had at least one runner on in each at-bat.  Strong defensive plays on both teams kept runs off the board.

The Pioneers managed to break through with a run in the fifth inning.  The Lobos threatened in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded and two outs.

TWU got a ground ball to escape the inning.  Texas Woman's added a run in the seventh.  In the bottom half, junior Elizabeth Clemente doubled with one out.  The Pioneers retired the next two batters for the win.

For Sul Ross State, Clemente had three hits.  Junior Leanza Chambers (0-4) gave up six hits, two runs (neither earned), walked two and struck out three in seven innings.

For Texas Woman's, Allison Gonzalez (1-0) threw a five-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts over seven innings.

Game 2
TWU scored a run in the first inning.  In the bottom half, freshman Jenna Leanos reached on an error and went to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Senior Ciera Avila was hit by a pitch.  On the next pitch, Avila stole second with Leanos scoring on the throw to second.  The Pioneers took the lead back at 2-1 in the second inning.

In the third inning, Avila smoked the ball over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2. In the fourth inning, SRSU used two hits, a walk and two ground balls to score twice.

In the seventh inning, Texas Woman's scored a run.  The Pioneers had a runner at third with two outs.  Sul Ross State got the next batter to fly out for the win.

For Sul Ross State, senior Alyvia Quintana (1-2) gave up seven hits, three runs with one earned, walked two and struck out one in seven innings. 

For Texas Woman's, Janyssa Ramos (1-1) gave up three hits, two runs and walked two in two-thirds of an inning.

Sul Ross State remains home, Sunday, Feb. 16 taking on #1 UT Tyler.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
