Sul Ross State Battles All The Way With Falcons

ODESSA, Texas – Junior Victoria Aguayo and senior Cheyanne Bonilla scored 20+ points each as the Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-14 Lone Star Conference, 2-16) lost 83-74 to The University of Texas Permian Basin (10-5 LSC, 12-9), Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.

Sul Ross State and UT Permian Basin battled back-and-forth the entire first period.  There were seven lead changes and five ties.

Freshman TaMaiya Mims hit a lay-up through traffic to put the Lobos up 17-14 at the 2:25 mark.  The Falcons scored five straight to lead 19-17.  Aguayo grabbed a rebound and scored just in front of the buzzer to make it 19-19.

For the first six minutes of the second period, it was SRSU who was in charge.  Junior Jema Padilla scored to put Sul Ross State up 31-26 at the 4:04 mark.  UTPB closed the half on a 14-5 run.

UT Permian Basin led by at least seven points for the first 17 minutes after halftime.  Down, 70-58 at the 5:45 mark of the final period, the Lobos began to charge back in the game.

Sophomore Melody Martinez hit a 10-foot jumper that cut the gap to three, 76-73 with 1:44 to go.  The Falcons hit five free throws over the last 64 seconds to hold off SRSU.

The Lobos made their defense work for them.  SRSU forced 19 turnovers which produced 23 points.

For Sul Ross State, Bonilla had 23 points, five assists, six steals and hit three triples while Aguayo scored 21 points with two steals.  Martinez scored 13 points. 

For UT Permian Basin, Taysha Rushton had 22 points, five assists and hit six 3-pointers.

Sul Ross State begins a two-week home stand, Thursday, Feb. 6, against Midwestern State.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
