Lobos Swing Away With Mustangs

SILVER CITY, New Mexico – Senior Cassandra Espinoza had a double-double as the Sul Ross State University volleyball team (1-14 LSC, 3-19) lost 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14) to Western New Mexico (6-9 LSC, 12-15), Saturday afternoon at Drag's Court. 

In the first set, Western New Mexico got off to an 8-1 start.  Sul Ross State settled down and began to chip away.

Senior Sarah Chavez found the back corner to close the gap to 20-17.  The Mustangs took the next five points to close the set.

In the second set, sophomore Emily Scott bounced the ball of the block to put SRSU up 8-7.  Western New Mexico went on a 10-2 run to take control.

In the third set, Sul Ross State was in control the whole way.  At 24-19, it looked like a fourth set was coming.

The Mustangs scored four straight to make it 24-23.  Sophomore Anna Kasper hammered the ball to the floor to close it out.

In the fourth set, a 16-7 start by WNM sealed the match.

For Sul Ross State, Espinoza had 13 kills, 15 digs and hit .289 while junior BreAnna Quarles had 18 digs.

For Western New Mexico, Jayden Hughes had 12 kills and Brynlee Barris added 11 kills.

Sul Ross State keeps to the road, Friday, Nov. 14, taking on St. Edward's.  The match is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
