Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lobos Claw past Eagles in Home Opener

Alpine, Texas - Sul Ross State University Women's Basketball (1–0) opened the 2025–26 season with a strong 65–58 win over Northern New Mexico College Saturday at the Pete P. Gallego Center in Alpine, Texas.

The Lobos showcased resilience and balance on both ends of the floor, overcoming early shooting struggles by dominating the free-throw line and forcing key turnovers down the stretch. Senior Victoria Aguayo led the way with 17 points, six rebounds and five steals, while Sophiya Bustillos added 13 points and five steals, including three big fourth-quarter threes that helped maintain control. Leslie Mojica delivered a strong all-around performance with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists, going 7-of-8 at the line. Sul Ross strengthened its edge defensively with 19 team steals, turning Northern New Mexico's miscues into 23 points, winning the rebounding battle 41–37, and closing the game by shooting 87.5% from the free-throw line (21–24) to secure the victory.

"It was a great win for us as a team opening up the 2025-26 season. Our kids played hard and fought throughout the entire ball game even though we didn't shoot the ball well. The team shot 87.5% (21-24) at the free throw line. I am very happy about that. I was worried about today's game because Northern New Mexico College had some games under their belt already while this was our first game opening the season. Also, we out rebound Northern New Mexico College and had more steals." – Head Women's Basketball Coach E.J.

Sul Ross Women's Basketball hit the road to play November 21 Friday with a tip off time set for 5:00 PM at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.
