Lobos Pick Up Draw Against Hilltoppers

ALPINE, Texas – Two records fell as the Sul Ross State University men's soccer team (1-0-1 Lone Star Conference, 4-2-3) picked up a 2-2 tie with St. Edward's (1-1-1 LSC, 3-4-3), Wednesday afternoon at Lobo Soccer Field.  This pushed the Lobos' unbeaten streak to seven games, the longest in men's or woman's program history.

Sul Ross State and St. Edward's played strong defense allowing just five combined shots on goal in the first half.  At the 19:33 mark, junior Jose Ramos blasted a shot that was knocked away at the last moment by a Hilltopper defender.

SEU got one through with 4:28 to go.  In the second half, sophomore Diego Hernandez put it past the keeper after two great passes to make it 1-1 just a little over five minutes into the half.

At the 83:56 mark, senior Johsua Hernandez-Gutierrez scored off a pass from junior Miguel Achique.  St. Edward's stunned the Lobos scoring with seven seconds left.

Sul Ross State Head Coach Bailey Guffin
"Disappointed to not take all three points today. We came out with a really good game plan and created a lot of good chances in dangerous areas.  St. Edward's is a team you have to play for a full 90 to get a result, today they showed just how tough that can be, even when you play well.  We'll take the positives we can and now we just expect a good result going into Texas A&M International."

Sul Ross State had 14 shots with eight on goal, four corner kicks and were called for 11 fouls.  Sophomore Benjamin Aviles extended his goalless streak to 350.32 before it was stopped.  That broke the record of 342.55 by Alexis Tellez (2021).

St. Edward's had six shots with five on goal, four corner kicks and were called for 11 fouls.

Sul Ross State hits the road, Saturday, Oct. 11 playing Texas A&M International.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
