Sul Ross State Battles Tough With Javelinas

ALPINE, Texas – Senior Cheyanne Bonilla and sophomore Melody Martinez scored in double-figures as the Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-12 Lone Star Conference, 2-14) lost 56-50 to Texas A&M Kingsville (7-5 LSC, 11-8), Saturday afternoon at the Peter P. Gallego Center.

Sul Ross State and Texas A&M Kingsville played on even terms throughout the entire first period.  Freshman TaMaiya Mims cashed in her long-distance calling card.  That tied the game at 17-17 to end the opening period.

TAMKU opened the second period with a 12-2 burst to lead 29-19 at the 6:47 mark.  Texas A&M Kingsville led by at least seven points the rest of the period.

Down 41-31 at the 7:12 mark of the third period, the Lobos began to climb back into the game.  Bonilla knocked a shot down from the parking lot.  That tied the game at 42-42 with 3:35 to go.

The Javelinas hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to go up 47-44.  Seven straight points in the first four minutes of the final period sealed the game for TAMKU.

The Lobos forced 22 turnovers to produce 16 points.  SRSU held the Javelinas to shooting 34.9% from the floor and 25% on triples.

For Sul Ross State, Bonilla had 16 points, six assists and three steals and Martinez scored 11 points with three steals.  Junior Victoria Aguayo had eight rebounds (seven defensive) and came away with four steals.

For Texas A&M Kingsville, Janessa Payne had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Sul Ross State hits the road, Thursday, Jan. 30, taking on Angelo State.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
