Sul Ross Runs With Greyhounds

PORTALES, N.M. – Senior Cheyanne Bonilla had a double-double as the Sul Ross State University women's basketball team (1-9 Lone Star Conference, 2-11) lost 98-78 to Eastern New Mexico (7-3 LSC, 12-4), Thursday evening at Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena.

For the first six minutes, Sul Ross State and Eastern New Mexico battled on even terms.  Bonilla went coast-to-coast to hit a lay-up.

That put SRSU up 12-10 at the 4:33 mark.  The Greyhounds went on a 15-4 run over the last four minutes to lead by nine after 10 minutes.

For the first two minutes of the second period, ENMU could not shake the pesky Lobos.  Junior Victoria Aguayo scored off a fast break to cut it to 29-22 with 8:07 to go.  Eastern New Mexico went on an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to finally take control.

The Lobos were on fire from 3-point land shooting 66.7%.  SRSU did a fine job defending the three allowing the Greyhounds to shoot just 31.3%.

For Sul Ross State, Bonilla had a strong night with 18 points, 10 assists and four steals while hitting 7-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 on triples.  This is the first double-double by a Lobo this season.

Aguayo had 17 points and four steals, freshman Sophiya Bustillos scored 11 points and sophomore Melody Martinez had 10 points.

For Eastern New Mexico, Nataya Lockett scored 23 points.

Sul Ross State closes out a two-week road stretch, Saturday, Jan. 18 playing West Texas A&M.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
