PLAINVIEW, Texas — Riding a three-game winning streak, the Sul Ross State men's soccer team was one victory away from setting the program's longest winning streak.
After outscoring their opponents 8-1 in the last three games, the Lobos struggled in the first half against the Wayland Baptist Pioneers.
In the end, the Pioneers scored two goals in the second half to come away with a 2-0 victory Tuesday afternoon at J.V. Hilliard Field.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
Only seven shots were taken in the opening half by both teams.
Wayland Baptist took four shots while the Lobos were held to three.
Sul Ross State had two shots on goal in the first half as
Sean Carlos Rivera aimed at the net during the 10th minute and
Angel Lugo fired a shot in the 35th minute.
The Lobos managed to out-shoot the Pioneers in the second half, 9-6. Sul Ross State began the second half with three shots, two coming at the goal.
During the 54th minute, Wayland Baptist took a 1-0 advantage with a goal by Dario Catalan that came off an assist by Jamol Williams.
Five minutes later, the Pioneers found the back of the net once more as Williams scored off an assist from Jose Colina.
The game got a little heated as five yellow cards were handed out down the stretch.
Racing against the clock, Sul Ross State had four shots on goal but the Pioneer defense answered with a stop each time.
