VOLLEYBALL: Lobos fall in four sets to UT Permian Basin

ODESSA, Texas — On Thursday evening at the Falcon Dome, the Sul Ross State volleyball team fell in four sets to the UT Permian Basin Falcons to open up play at the Dr. Steve Aicinena "Iceman" Invitational.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Falcons controlled the first set by using a 4-0 run to take a nine-point lead.

UT Permian Basin ended up surging ahead to an 11-point lead to take the first set.

Sul Ross State was a different team in the second set, taking a 10-5 lead on a kill by Cassandra Espinoza.

Using a 6-0 run, the Falcons flipped the script by leading 14-13.

The set went back and forth until the Lobos went on a 3-0 run to take a 19-17 lead. Natalie Hernandez and Edie Coleman each tallied a kill during the run.

UT Permian Basin tied up the set at 22-all before Sul Ross State pulled ahead with a 3-1 run as Hernandez got a kill to seal the 1-1 tie in the match.

The Falcons went on a 6-0 run to lead 11-5 early in the third set. UT Permian Basin led by as much as 10 points late in the set before closing things out with a 4-0 run to take a 2-1 lead.

During the final set, the game was close up until the Falcons went ahead 12-7.

Sul Ross State put together a 4-0 run to trail by one as Eliana Mata served up two aces while Sarah Chavez and Espinoza each had a kill to highlight the run.

The Falcons responded with a 5-0 run to gain some breathing room to eventually take the set and match.

  • Espinoza and Hernandez had five kills each.
  • Coleman, Chavez and Angelli Sanchez finished with four kills each.
  • Mata had 15 assists, four service aces and nine digs.
  • Brylee Sweeten tallied eight assists, one kill and three digs.
  • Tatyana Colon finished with 17 digs.
>> UP NEXT: The Lobos have two matches on Friday, Sept. 13 to wrap up the Dr. Steve Aicinena "Iceman" Invitational.. The first match is at 4:30 p.m. CST against New Mexico Highlands while the second match is against Southeastern Oklahoma at 7 p.m. CST.
