BASEBALL: Lobos hold on to beat Macalester, 13-11

TUCSON, Ariz. — Behind an explosive offensive performance by Alvaro Hernandez, the Sul Ross State baseball team notched its first win of the season with a 13-11 victory over Macalester College on Saturday night at Empire High School on Day 2 of the Tucson Invitational.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a leadoff walk by Aaron Morales, Carsen Thor delivered an RBI single to get the Lobos on the board in the first inning.

The Lobos managed to score in seven-straight innings.

Hernandez hit an RBI single in the second to make the score 2-0 after Lee Kubosh hit a leadoff double.

Macalester cut the deficit to one in the bottom half of the second with an RBI double.

Sul Ross State pushed across two runs in the third. Thor drove in Morales with an RBI single while Estevan Ortiz scored on a fielder's choice by Peyten Kennard.

With an RBI single, Macalester trailed by two at the end of three.

The Lobos turned it up a notch in the fourth when they scored four runs to extend the lead to six runs.

Corbin Dube hit a one-out double and then Hernandez hit a two-run home run.

Thor plated home another run with another single and then he later scored on a passed ball.

Macalester answered back by scoring two runs on a single in the bottom of the fourth to trail 8-4.

Hernandez stayed hot at the plate as he hit an RBI single to right in the fifth to drive in Jared Roiz who reached on a leadoff double.

The tables turned in the bottom of the fifth as Macalester scored five runs on four hits. The Scots got a three-run home run during the rally to tie up the game at 9-9.

Sul Ross State took the lead back after Ortiz scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.

Hernandez hit his second home run of the night as he hit a solo dinger in the seventh to give the Lobos a two-run advantage.

The Scots cut the deficit to one run in the bottom half of the seventh with an RBI infield single.

Macalester tied up the game at 11-all in the eighth with an RBI single.

Hernandez drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth with a single to right that brought in Kubosh.

The Lobos got another run when Hernandez scored on an error by the first baseman.

  • Hernandez went 5 for 5 with two home runs, three singles and six RBI.
  • Thor had three singles, a walk and three RBI to go 3 for 4.
  • Ortiz finished 3 for 5 with three singles.
  • Morales was walked twice to go 2 for 4 with a single, double and an RBI.
  • Kubosh had a single and a double to finish 2 for 5.
  • The Lobos finished with 17 hits.
  • Christian Loveless earned the win after he threw the final two innings, tallying three strikeouts.
>> UP NEXT: The Lobos are scheduled to take on Augsburg University at 9 a.m. Arizona time at the Kino Sports Complex followed by Gustavus Adolphus at 12:30 p.m. Arizona time on Sunday, March 10.
