SOFTBALL: Lobos pull off sweep of Eagles with 9-1 win in series finale

For the first time since April, 15, 2022, the Sul Ross State softball team was able to pull off a three-game sweep.

On Friday afternoon, the Lobos defeated the University of the Ozarks Eagles, 9-1, in six innings at the Lobo Softball Field.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a 1-2-3 top of the first for pitcher Hannah Clark, who made two of the three outs, the Lobos put up a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning.

Two runs scored on a defensive miscue by the shortstop. Jasmine Garcia then hit a two RBI single up the middle to extend the lead.

Alisandria Garcia added a run in the bottom of the second when she scored on a wild pitch.

The Eagles broke up the no-hitter in the top of the third with a leadoff single by Margaret Blackstar.

In the bottom half of the third, Toni Mishnick hit an RBI single to right center to make the score 6-0.

University of the Ozarks erased the shutout in the top of the fourth when Mack Lucio hit an RBI single through the left side.

The Lobos extended their lead to six runs after Samantha Chavez stole third and then scored on a bad throw from the catcher in the bottom of the fifth.

Ciera Avila launched a solo home run down the left field line to start things off in the bottom of the sixth.

Jasmine Garcia drove in the final run of the game with an RBI single through the left side that brought in Samantha Bustos.

  • The Lobos had 14 hits.
  • Avila went 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and one RBI.
  • Avila is now riding a seven-game hitting streak.
  • Avila went 6 for 9 during the series with three singles, two doubles, a home run and three RBI.
  • Avila leads the Lobos with 10 doubles and 17 RBI. She is hitting .409 with 27 hits.
  • Jasmine Garcia finished 2 for 4 with two singles and three RBI.
  • Mishnick had two singles to go 2 for 4 with an RBI.
  • Chavez hit a pair of doubles to finish 2 for 3 with a walk.
  • Chavez finished the series going 8 for 10 with six singles, two doubles and two RBI.
  • Chavez leads the squad with 36 hits, a .439 average and 12 stolen bases.
  • Lily Wiser and Madison Hodges each went 1 for 4 with a single.
  • Adriana Hernandez had a single to go 1 for 2.
  • Kyndell Garcia and Vivian Jimenez both finished 1 for 3 with a single.
  • Clark improved to 3-2 in the circle after she threw 5.2 innings allowing six hits while she tallied one strikeout.
  • Clark leads the pitching staff with a 2.85 ERA in 27 innings pitched and six starts.
  • The Lobos are 8-2 at home, which marks the first winning record at home since 2022.
