BASEBALL: Lobos pull off three-game sweep of Hardin-Simmons

There was no shortage of excitement during the three-game series between the Sul Ross State baseball team and the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys.

After a walk-off win in Game 1 and having to postpone Game 2 due to the wet weather, the Lobos resumed play on Saturday afternoon.

As if one walk-off wasn't enough, the Lobos continued their magic by winning Game 2 by a score of 7-6 courtesy of a walk-off RBI single by Aaron Morales.

Behind two home runs by Peyten Kennard and some solid team play, Sul Ross State pulled out the brooms by notching the series sweep with a 16-11 victory in Game 3.

The Lobos then added two more runs to take the lead on an RBI single by Primo Vasquez and a sacrifice fly by Corbin Dube that brought in Carsen Thor from second.

Hardin-Simmons narrowed the deficit to one run in the third, but the Lobos were able to get a two-run home run by Kennard in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-2.

Things got interesting in the top of the seventh when Hardin-Simmons took a 6-5 lead after scoring three runs on three hits.

Sul Ross State tied up the score at six-all in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Estevan Ortiz.

To set up the walk-off in the bottom of the ninth, Steven Mills got a pinch-hit leadoff single and he was later moved to second with a sacrifice bunt from Alvaro Hernandez.

>> POSTGAME INTERVIEWS:

"It's always a great feeling to sweep somebody, but when you do it in the fashion we just did, after our start, it holds a little more weight. We look forward to continuing to keep building and keep getting better. We started off slow, but we've figured some things out." Head coach Ely Gallego on getting the sweep

"If you go back and look at our stats in the first 13 games, we're not having the two-out RBIs, we're not having those hits and those moments. We just weren't connecting. We've had some more competitive practices, holding guys feet to the fire and letting guys compete for jobs. All of a sudden, we start getting these things, guys start barreling baseballs up. We're starting to do the little things." — Ely Gallego on the offensive production

"We're starting to get to the point we're making an emphasis to our pitchers, 'Hey, we're going to do whatever we can on the offensive side. You keep it close, we'll go score runs.' The pitching staff has responded to that and has really done their job." — Ely Gallego on the pitching staff's improvement

"These three wins were huge because we've been struggling. We just got to keep it rolling into next week. We're capable of doing this. All week in practice we've been locked in. Hitters have been putting in a lot of work." — Peyten Kennard

"Just trying to fill up the zone, give us a chance to take Game 2 of the series and try to win a series. My defense did a good job on backing me up. We've improved week by week. Our bullpens have been more focused. We're starting to come along. We knew it would happen. We have the guys for it." — Derek Rojo

"Coming together as a team this series was huge. Hitting the walk-off. Primo, of course, coming through at the end right there. So, we just kind of built off that momentum. That second game I saw a ball that I liked and I just ultimately tried to produce for the team." — Aaron Morales

>> UP NEXT: The Lobos host the University of Texas at Dallas for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 22 with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. CST.
