SOFTBALL: Lobos notch 3-1 win over Franklin and Marshall College

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Sul Ross State softball team extended its winning streak to three games with a 3-1 win over the Franklin and Marshall College Diplomats on Wednesday afternoon on Day 2 of the Tucson Invitational Games at Lincoln Park.

The first game of the day against the Midland University JV was an exhibition game that went in favor of Midland by a score of 9-8 in six innings.

>> GAME 2:

During the contest against Franklin and Marshall, the Lobos had a golden opportunity to blow the game wide open with the bases loaded after they were gifted with three walks in the first inning.

Unfortunately, the Diplomats worked out of the jam to keep the game scoreless after one.

Starting pitcher Leanza Chambers retired her first six batters in a row.

The Lobos got on the board in the bottom of the second when Kyndell Garcia reached on a one-out walk. She later stole second and advanced to third on an infield single by Samantha Chavez.

With runners at the corners, Sul Ross State executed the double steal as Garcia was able to swipe home.

Franklin and Marshall tallied its first hit of the contest on a leadoff single in the top of third.

After a little lull in the action, the Lobos extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Garcia scored on a passed ball after she led off the inning with a walk.

Scoring the first two runs, Garcia then drove in Janel Luna in the fifth with an RBI infield single to make the score 3-0.

The Diplomats erased the shutout in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to left.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • The Lobos and the Diplomats each had five hits.
  • Chavez went 2 for 3 with two singles and a walk. Chavez is now riding an eight-game hitting streak with a team-best 26 hits.
  • Madison Hodges and Jaelyn Zuniga each finished 1 for 3 with a single. Hodges also reached base on a walk in the first.
  • Garcia went 1 for 1 with a single, two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Chambers threw a complete-game with two strikeouts to improve to 4-3 on the year.
